Unreached Tribal peoples live in Central and South America, Mexico, Africa, Papua New Guinea, Papua Indonesia.
If every tribal person on the planet held hands, they would stretch around the earth more than nine times!
Read Psalm 67
Read verse 1 again. An overseas witness expression begins with a stateside salvation experience. A salvation experience founded on the mercy of God. Describe when you first became aware of your need for the merciful grace of God. When did a sense of hopelessness and helplessness set in?
Read verse 2 again. Everyone throughout the earth has the opportunity to know that God is infinitely powerful, eternally existent, and inherently good. Read Romans 1:18-20 and Acts 14:17. However only the gospel informs people of God’s ways (the plan of salvation) and enables them to experience that plan (His saving power). You're on a short term mission trip to an unreached Tribal people. You’ve been asked to explain God’s ways (the plan of salvation) and how to experience his saving power. What do you say?
Read verses 3-7. There is a blessing that results from bringing the gospel to the nations so they can praise God.Describe how it would make you feel to know you had a part in helping Tribal peoples praise God for the first time by either going or supporting those who went?
The five steps of bringing the gospel to Tribal people are;
Learn their language and culture.
Teach them literacy by creating an alphabet.
Teach them God’s word from beginning to end.
Translate God’s word into their language.
Train them to spread the Gospel to others.
Which of these steps do you think is the hardest? Which do you think is the most rewarding?
There was help coming from all directions.
The entire village would hike up the mountain an hour away and carry down all our lumber. They dug away the ground that our houses sit on. They were actually moving mountains.
There is a whole network of missionaries here in Papua New Guinea who’s sole job is to help us Church planters in the bush stay in the bush.
There are so many praying for us.
It was so cool to have Northwest Church send a team over here. My house would not have been built unless those four guys had come.
Of the roles mentioned here, which do you see yourself most suited to fill?
Unlike the previous POD on Nations, where one book was recommended for the whole group to read, there are several books recommended for the rest of the PODs. Your group can pick the same book to read or read different books. Quotations for each week’s discussions will be lifted from the recommended list below. Few things are more motivating than the stories of those who have gone ahead of us. Biographies are a rich source of inspiration. The suggested readings are the biographies of some of the great Tribal missionaries. They are all tremendous. z
We knew deep down inside that we could never just stay here in America, the land of comfort and ease because we would be miserable if we did. The forgotten tribes were calling to us. The enchanting land of Indonesia had become like a set of gallows to us, but boy were they beautiful gallows. They were nearly irresistible. Phillips, D.S. (2013-01-19). Prophecies Of Pale Skin (p. 61). Dao Publishing. Kindle Edition.
How does a sense of being increasingly uneasy with the thought of staying rather than going, play a role in considering Tribal missions?
“We have been waiting for your message. Come! We want you to come and live among us! You can have trees for your houses and land to build them on. Come here and live among us and we will help you learn our language. We will help you so that we can hear your message. Thank you! Thank you! Yes, come!” he excitedly replied as the other Dao people in the room also nodded in agreement…Then looking up at my face and directly into my eyes, Apius continued. “Friend, when I saw you and your wife hike into our valley and I saw your pale skin, and then I saw you building a house here and trying to learn our language, and you told us you had an important message for us, I remembered my father’s dream. Upon remembering the dream I decided I would do everything I could to help you learn our language as quickly as possible. I am here, living with you and helping you because I am waiting for the day I can hear your message. That is why I built my house here.” Phillips, D.S. (2013-01-19). Prophecies Of Pale Skin (p. 173 and 205). Dao Publishing. Kindle Edition.
Again and again, missionaries are confronted with the testimony that God has previously “visited” the very people they are trying to reach. What does this indicate about our role in Tribal missions?
“Today, you will finally hear his name” I announced as Wikipai and Daapoi sat across from me getting ready to hear the first newly translated section of scripture for the day. They had been waiting for this day for a long time and today was the day that they would hear about the New Testament account of His birth. They knew from the lesson the day before that Mary was a virgin and a miracle had occurred in order that she became pregnant. They knew that she had gone to Bethlehem to give birth just as the prophecies had foretold. They knew that today was the day. You could have heard a pin drop as I read the words to them that Jennie had finished translating just a few days before from the book of Matthew: “She gave birth to a son, and they called his name... Yesusi”. I stopped and let them soak it in for a minute. “Yesusi... Yesusi... Yesusi..” they repeated over and over again to each other with a reverent whisper as if the very speaking of His name was a demonstration of such a long awaited for hope, a demonstration of the Creator’s power. Describe how it would make you feel to finally reveal Jesus to an unreached Tribe and have them respond with such eager yet hushed tones of reverence? What does this say about Tribal missions for today?
