SOGY stands for Support Others or Go Yourself. The goal of global disciple making is for everyone to become SOGY. Supporting others involves forming a World Team (see below). Going yourself involves contacting a mission agency on the list below to begin the going process.
A World Team is a creative and effective way to support others. It functions like a sports fantasy team. You decide who is on your team. Use the SOGY List to recruit members to your team. Each day of the week corresponds to an unreached people group: Monday (tribal), Tuesday (Hindu), Wednesday (unreligious), Thursday (Muslim), and Friday (Buddhist). The idea is to support people each day of the week. Here is how it all works:
Step 1: Create your team.
Contact a mission agency listed on the SOGY List. For instance, you may contact Pioneers for Muslim peoples (Thursday).
Inform the person at the mission agency of your desire to partner with workers serving among unreached peoples.
Explain that you wish to be added to the mailing list of a few workers. Try to partner with both Americans working overseas and nationals serving in their own countries. It is a great idea to balance your team by having some of each. Try to match up with those with whom you have affinity:: same gender, age, marital status, and so on. Families have a great time partnering with missionary families with same-aged children. Ask to be linked with people who communicate often. Realize the mission agency will not forward the workers’ contact information to you but will forward yours to them. This is for security reasons. You will also have to abide by the security guidelines included in each communique you receive. Usually this just means not forwarding or reproducing the material.
Step 2: Develop your team.
Once you’re linked, decide on the type and duration of your relationship. Some people self-commit to one-year partnerships. Some people simply start out as information partners and gradually become prayer and/or financial partners. Some even progress to a well-planned personal visit.
Focus on your team members by praying by day of the week and/or giving monthly to the worker(s) through their respective sending agencies
